The Semiquincentennial commemorations are just around the corner, and there has never been a better time to rediscover the places, people, and powerful stories that shaped our nation.

A Journey Through America’s Founding Story

With the Revolutionary Road Trip book, I invite you to travel alongside me to hidden Revolutionary-era fortresses, authentic colonial taverns, and battlefields where both famous leaders and lesser-known heroes shaped the future of America.

This book grew out of years of firsthand research, filming, and conversations across the thirteen original colonies. From national parks and historic cities like Princeton, Charleston and Saratoga Springs to lesser-known gems like a colonial tavern in Gettysburg, I set out to uncover the living history that still echoes across these landscapes.

Along the way, I of course sprinkled in food and drink stops to enjoy:

  • Taste Martha Washington’s Cherry Bounce recipe, authentically re-created in York County, PA

  • Walk hallowed ground at Camden Battlefield with a veteran and military historian

  • Hear oral histories passed down by passionate guides and local experts

  • Discover untold stories that don’t always make it into textbooks

Think of this book as a colonial time machine — one fueled by curiosity, community voices, and boots-on-the-ground storytelling.

Have you heard about South Carolina’s Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians? They have an important story to share about their tribe’s role in the American Revolution, as Lisa Collins reveals in my Charleston, South Carolina chapter.

More Than History — A Travel Companion

Revolutionary Road Trip blends intriguing, fact-filled storytelling with practical travel advice for curious and intrepid explorers. Whether you’re planning your own Revolutionary-era road trip in honor of America’s 250th or simply love American history, this book offers both inspiration and insight.

You’ll find:

  • Behind-the-scenes stories from my travels

  • Recommendations for visiting these historic sites, including chapters outlined as mini trip itineraries

  • Personal reflections on why this history matters now more than ever

As we approach America’s 250th birthday, understanding our founding story — in all its complexity — is an enriching experience. Exploring these places firsthand reminds us that history isn’t distant. It lives in communities, landscapes, and the people who preserve these stories every day.

Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts leads us through Saratoga National Historical Park and reveals the remarkable story of a baroness who becomes a "prisoner of war” and whose journals are later published as special war correspondence from the American Revolution.

National Parks Foundation

From coast to coast and within my Revolutionary Road Trip stories , I’ve explored national parks that reveal the extraordinary diversity, beauty, and history of our nation. These sacred landscapes connect us—to nature, to one another, and to the stories that shape who we are. Preserving them is not only about protecting wild places, but about safeguarding our shared heritage for generations to come.

For that reason, I’m proud to support the National Park Foundation with a portion of the proceeds from the sales of this book. Visit their website to learn more about how you can also support our parks.
