Exploring Bordeaux Wine Country: Médoc, Saint-Émilion & River Cruising with Uniworld

Riverside Elegance on the Garonne

Sailing into Bordeaux with Darley aboard Uniworld’s Brilliant Bordeaux cruise on the elegant S.S. Bon Voyage, soaking in sunshine and riverside views along the River Garonne.

Few places capture the romance of wine, history, and French culture quite like Bordeaux.

When I arrived in this corner of southwestern France, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the landscape—vineyards stretching across the countryside, historic châteaux rising between rows of vines, and charming villages where wine isn’t just something you taste. It’s part of everyday life. Bordeaux Wine Travel_2

In this episode of the Travels with Darley Podcast, I explore Bordeaux wine country and share ways travelers can experience the region beyond the tasting room—from cycling through vineyard-lined countryside to wandering medieval villages that have been producing wine for centuries.

I’m also joined by France expert Loïc Bailly of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, who shares insights on why Bordeaux is such a rewarding destination for travelers who enjoy immersive, slow travel.

One of my favorite ways to explore the region is by river cruise, using a ship as a floating home base while sailing between wine regions and waking up each day to new landscapes.

Discovering the Bordeaux Wine Region

Bordeaux is one of the world’s most famous wine regions, but what surprised me most was how vibrant and welcoming the city itself feels.

Its historic center—recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is filled with grand squares, elegant architecture, and lively cafés where locals linger over coffee or a glass of wine.

I loved wandering along the Garonne River, exploring markets, admiring historic buildings, and simply soaking in the relaxed rhythm of life in the city.

From Bordeaux, the surrounding countryside quickly opens into some of France’s most iconic wine landscapes.

At the Gates of Bordeaux Wine Country

With vineyards stretching across the countryside, Darley pauses at the entrance to a historic wine estate in Bordeaux’s famed Médoc region. Passing through gates like this feels a bit like stepping back in time—where centuries-old winemaking traditions, grand châteaux, and rows of vines tell the story of one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.

Cycling Through the Médoc Vineyards

One of the most memorable experiences I had was cycling through the Médoc wine region.

Located north of Bordeaux along the Gironde estuary, Médoc is home to some of the world’s most prestigious wine estates.

Cycling through the countryside, I passed long rows of vines, elegant châteaux tucked behind tree-lined drives, and quiet country roads that felt far removed from busy city life.

Every few minutes another estate appeared in the distance. It’s easy to understand why this region produces some of Bordeaux’s most celebrated wines—especially the Cabernet Sauvignon–based blends that define Médoc wines.

Exploring by bike allowed me to slow down and truly experience the landscape.

Wandering the Medieval Village of Saint-Émilion

If Bordeaux wine country has a storybook setting, Saint-Émilion might be it.

This hilltop village is surrounded by vineyards and known for producing some of the region’s most sought-after wines.

Walking through Saint-Émilion feels like stepping back in time. Cobblestone streets wind past historic churches, underground wine cellars, and small tasting rooms tucked into centuries-old stone buildings.

I spent time simply wandering—stopping into shops, enjoying a café break, and admiring sweeping views over the vineyards from hilltop viewpoints.

It’s the kind of place where you arrive for the wine, but stay for the atmosphere.

Darley explores the cobblestone lanes of Saint-Émilion, one of Bordeaux wine country’s most beautiful medieval villages. Surrounded by vineyards and centuries of winemaking history, it’s the kind of place where every corner invites you to slow down, wander, and soak in the charm of southwest France.

Exploring Bordeaux by River Cruise

One of the most relaxing ways to experience Bordeaux is by river cruise.

Sailing along the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers, I watched vineyard landscapes glide by while visiting historic towns and wine regions along the route.

What I love about river cruising is the simplicity. Instead of packing and unpacking between destinations, the ship travels with you—serving as a comfortable home base for exploring the region.

Many itineraries include excursions to Médoc, Saint-Émilion, and charming wine villages, with guided experiences highlighting Bordeaux’s wine, history, and cuisine.

Unexpected Ways to Experience Bordeaux

Wine tastings are certainly a highlight of visiting Bordeaux—but there are plenty of other ways to experience the region.

One unique adventure was exploring Bordeaux by retro sidecar, riding through the city streets and countryside while learning about the region’s history and wine culture.

I also loved visiting local markets, where stalls overflow with fresh produce, cheeses, breads, and regional specialties.

And of course, there are canelés, Bordeaux’s beloved pastry. These small caramelized cakes—crisp on the outside and soft inside—are flavored with rum and vanilla. After my first bite, I completely understood why locals love them.

To celebrate, Uniworld is offering special anniversary savings on select itineraries, making it an appealing time to explore Bordeaux and other destinations along Europe’s rivers.

Darley visits a lively Bordeaux market, discovering local seafood specialties like fresh oysters and shellfish. Exploring markets like these is one of the best ways to experience the flavors and everyday culture of southwest France.
