Walk Historic Charleston With Me: Introducing My New Audio Walking Tour

Charleston has always had a way of pulling you in. Turn any corner in the historic district and you're standing somewhere that mattered — a street where Revolutionary War soldiers marched, a building where founding-era families lived and plotted and prayed, a waterfront that witnessed the birth of a nation. The history here isn't behind velvet ropes. It's right under your feet.

That's exactly why I wanted to create something different for this city. Not a group tour. Not a fixed schedule. Something that lets you explore at your own pace, on your own terms, with the stories delivered right where they happened.

I'm so excited to introduce Historic Charleston with Darley Newman — my new GPS-triggered audio walking tour of one of America's most storied cities, available now through the TravelStorys app.

How The Audio Walking Tour in Charleston Works

Download the free TravelStorys app (available on iOS and Android), then purchase Historic Charleston with Darley Newman for $9.99 inside the app.

As you walk Charleston's historic district, audio stories trigger automatically based on your GPS location — so you're hearing about a landmark the moment you're standing in front of it. No tapping, no navigating, no squinting at a screen. Just walk and listen.

Why I Created This Tour

As a South Carolina native and someone who has spent years traveling the country tracing Revolutionary War history for Travels with Darley — and for my book, Revolutionary Road Trip: Hidden Stories of America's Founding Journey — Charleston holds a very special place for me.

I went down just a few weeks ago to test the tour myself, walking every stop, making sure the stories landed the way I wanted them to. And I can tell you firsthand: you can spend two or three days just exploring the history through these different locations. There is that much here.

With America's 250th anniversary of independence approaching, there has never been a better moment to walk these streets.

A Few Stops That Will Stay With You

The tour covers Charleston's historic district from Rainbow Row to the Battery, the Old Exchange, the Charleston Museum, and City Market. Here's a taste of what's waiting:

Rainbow Row — East Bay Street

The pastel-painted Georgian row houses along East Bay Street are one of Charleston's most photographed landmarks — and one of its most misunderstood.

These weren't always colorful. The buildings date to the early 1700s and served as merchant homes and warehouses when Charleston was one of the wealthiest cities in the colonial world. The paint came later. The history runs much deeper.

Marion Square

This six-acre park in the heart of Charleston's peninsula has served as a public gathering space, a military parade ground, and a site of civic life for centuries.

It's the kind of place where you can feel the layers of history simply by standing still — and the audio stories bring those layers to life in a way that changes how you see it.

Miles Brewton House — King Street

One of the finest examples of pre-Revolutionary architecture in America, the Miles Brewton House was built in the 1760s and has survived wars, occupations, and centuries of change largely intact.

Both British and Union forces commandeered it during their respective occupations of Charleston. It remains a private residence today — which makes the stories of what happened inside all the more remarkable.

White Point Garden — The Battery

At the southernmost tip of the Charleston peninsula, where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet, White Point Garden offers one of the most dramatic views in the city — and one of the most historically layered.

This was a place of public hangings, military fortification, and, today, quiet beauty. The walk out to the Battery is worth it for the view alone. The stories make it unforgettable.

Perfect for Solo Travelers, History Lovers & Anyone Who Wants to Go at Their Own Pace

One of the things I love most about this tour is the freedom it gives you. There's no group to keep up with, no set start time, no rushing past something you want to linger at. You move through the city the way I do — curious, unhurried, letting the stories pull you forward.

It's a perfect way to spend a morning, an afternoon, or stretch across multiple days if you want to go deep. Charleston rewards the slow traveler.

Pair It With the Book

This tour is a companion to my book, Revolutionary Road Trip: Hidden Stories of America's Founding Journey — which expands on the people and places that shaped the nation, including many of the stops you'll encounter on the walk.
