Join Darley in West Virginia for a special screening of the West Virginia PBS episodes and community event on Saturday, August 11th. At the historic Pocahontas County Opera House in Marlinton, West Virginia, the general public is invited to enjoy special activities to help connect to nature and get travel inspiration. Suitable for the entire family, this free community event will feature an ice cream social, a special debut of the West Virginia PBS episodes on the big screen and a post-screening panel featuring locals and experts featured in the award-winning PBS series, “Travels with Darley.” Get travel tips on great places to take a summer or fall road trip in West Virginia in the Monongahela National Forest and beyond. Meet Darley and locals from West Virginia featured in two PBS episodes. Kids and the whole family may enjoy learning about nature and the environment with hands on activities, like making a seed bomb and meeting live snakes, prize giveaways and more. Pocahontas County Opera House August 11th Activities 5:00-7:00 pm Free activities for the whole family, including live snakes, make a seed bomb, explore the galaxy, learn about red spruce, listen to old time music, and so much more. PBS Episodes Featuring West Virginia Attendees will get the opportunity to watch two episodes on West Virginia on the big screen in the historic Pocahontas County Opera House, which was built in 1910 as a vaudeville theater and community performance hall. This century old building is on the National Register of Historic Places and a true West Virginia gem. The excitement will build as Darley and locals and experts featured in the PBS episodes, including “Travels with Darley: West Virginia Adventures” and “Monongahela National Forest,” gather together to enjoy the adventures of traveling in West Virginia. These episodes combine West Virginia history and ecology with travel spots where viewers can go for scenic drives, fly-fishing, downhill mountain biking, hikes in the mountains, local food and drinks and more. Preview the Monongahela National Forest episode.With the “Monongahela National Forest episode”, viewers will learn about top stops to see waterfalls, flowers and mountain views along the Highland Scenic Highway, a National Scenic Byway. At Cranberry Glades, the largest area of bogs in West Virginia, viewers see where they can walk along a boardwalk at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center’s to learn about the unique eco-system and spot beautiful orchids. Darley and Thomas Minney of the Nature Conservancy showcase a West Virginia National Natural Landmark that nature lovers will cherish. Where to find some of the best WV fly fishing! Darley checks out the scene with Dustin Wichterman of Trout Unlimited. “More than one-third of the more than 900,000-acre Monongahela National Forest is in Pocahontas County and though it feels totally wild, it’s located within a day’s drive of about half of our nation’s population,” said Cara Rose, Executive Director of the Pocahontas County CVB, who is helping to organize the event. “We’re excited that PBS viewers can experience a portion of one of our nation’s most biologically diverse national forests and what our county has to offer visitors through this stunning episode.” For those interested in hiking or fishing, segments showcase ways to get active in the Monongahela. At iconic Seneca Rocks, Darley showcases a top fishing spot with Dustin Wichterman, who helps restore and rehabilitate rivers and streams with Trout Unlimited. She also joins historian Rob Whetsell to hike the Whispering Spruce Trail at Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia and where travelers can experience gorgeous views. The Nature Conservancy’s Thomas Minney showcases areas of West Virginia that are truly rare and special. At Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, viewers see where they can walk among the old company houses and enjoy comfort food, including great ice cream sundaes, at The Last Run Restaurant, owned by the Bodkin Sisters. “Travels with Darley: West Virginia Adventures” takes viewers on a scenic train ride in a rare steam locomotive and on walk through history at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Fly-fishing, downhill mountain biking at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, off-roading in the mountains, the mountain towns of Thomas, Davis and Fayetteville, and extreme whitewater rafting that regular travelers can enjoy during the upcoming Gauley Season are also highlighted.
