Sky Railway — A George R.R. Martin Vision on the Historic Santa Fe Railroad

If you want to understand what makes Santa Fe so unlike anywhere else in America, start on the railroad.

Sky Railway is the reimagined version of the historic Santa Fe Railway line — and it's the creative vision of George R.R. Martin, the author and creator of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Song of Ice and Fire. I sat down with George at the Legal Tender, a historic Old West saloon in the town of Lamy that you can reach by train, and heard firsthand how this beloved railway came back to life.

"We repaired the cars and then we repainted the cars," George told me. "We went for a Wolf and Dragon motif." Rather than chasing away graffiti artists, Martin brought them in — commissioning a local Santa Fe artist, one of the world's great graffiti artists, to paint the train cars in colorful patterns of stars, clouds, wolves, and dragons. The result, he said, is trains that are works of art unlike anything else running on American rails.

The experience doesn't stop at the paint job. Sky Railway offers sunset serenade rides, history and lore excursions with on-board docents, and full round-trip journeys from Santa Fe to Lamy and back — with a stop at the Legal Tender, an old Harvey House with serious historic atmosphere. And for couples looking for something truly unforgettable? Sky Railway hosts weddings on the rails, complete with live local music and landscapes straight out of a fantasy epic.

Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch — Where Hollywood History Meets High Desert Romance

About 15 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, tucked into a quiet hollow on a sprawling ranch, sits one of the most cinematic wedding venues in the American Southwest: Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch.

This 70-plus-year-old working movie ranch has served as the backdrop for Lonesome Dove, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Young Guns, Silverado, and more recently Dark Winds. With more than 24 authentic western structures and sets built across the property, Bonanza Creek is remarkable for one specific reason: you can stand anywhere on the ranch and look 360 degrees without seeing a single modern structure. It's an entirely preserved world unto itself.

El Rancho de Las Golondrinas — A Living History Wedding Venue on the Camino Real

For history-loving couples, there may be no more meaningful wedding venue in New Mexico than El Rancho de Las Golondrinas.

Once the last official rest stop on the Camino Real — the royal road connecting Mexico City to Santa Fe — this historic ranch sits in a valley where the water table runs high, making it a natural oasis for travelers for centuries. Today it operates as a living history museum depicting three distinct periods of New Mexico history: the Spanish Colonial period, the Mexican period, and the Territorial period, all brought to life by costumed interpreters including Pedro Martinez, who walked me through the property dressed as a soldier of the time.

The main casita dates to approximately 1710, built in a quadrangle fortress style to protect against plains Indian raids. Surrounded by original 18th-century buildings, working farms, and sweeping rural landscapes, El Rancho de Las Golondrinas places couples and their guests inside centuries of lived New Mexico history.

Bishop's Lodge, Auberge Collection — Mountain Seclusion at the Edge of the Santa Fe National Forest

Nestled on more than 300 acres at the edge of the Santa Fe National Forest, Bishop's Lodge, part of the Auberge Collection, offers a mountain setting that feels both deeply private and connected to the landscape that defines northern New Mexico.

Couples can exchange vows in historic gardens, a restored chapel, or open-air lawns framed by sweeping mountain views. Beyond the ceremony itself, Bishop's Lodge embraces the slower, more restorative pace Santa Fe is known for — with horseback rides through the property, quiet moments in nature, and wellness experiences that encourage guests and visitors alike to genuinely unwind. It's a place built for meaningful celebration, not just beautiful photographs.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado — High Desert Luxury in the Sangre de Cristo Foothills

Set amid the rolling foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado is one of my personal favorites — a resort I've returned to more than once, and for good reason.

The casita-style accommodations feel distinctly New Mexican, with southwestern design details, many featuring cozy fireplaces, and surrounded by wide-open landscapes that deliver some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets I've seen anywhere. For couples, the resort offers wedding packages that take full advantage of those epic views. For everyone else, the spa is reason enough to visit.

Ten Thousand Waves — Japanese Mountain Spa in the Santa Fe National Forest

Just ten minutes from downtown Santa Fe, Ten Thousand Waves feels worlds away from everything.

Inspired by Japan's great mountain hot spring resorts, this beloved retreat is nestled against the Santa Fe National Forest and invites guests to slow down through private soaking tubs, restorative bodywork, and the kind of peaceful, unhurried atmosphere that's increasingly rare. Kaz Tani introduced me to the experience, and I can tell you — donning a Japanese robe and moving between soaking tubs and massage treatments in the New Mexico mountains is one of those travel experiences that stays with you.

Whether you're visiting solo, as a couple, or as part of a bachelorette weekend, Ten Thousand Waves offers something that genuinely restores. It reflects both Japanese tradition and the healing spirit that has always been part of northern New Mexico's identity.

Ojo Santa Fe — Healing Waters with Deep New Mexico Roots

Of all the wellness experiences Santa Fe has to offer, few are as elemental — or as deeply rooted in the land — as Ojo Santa Fe.

Natural spring-fed thermal waters have drawn visitors to this property for generations. At Ojo Santa Fe, soaking isn't a trend or a spa amenity. It's part of a long tradition of healing through water, offered in mineral-rich pools surrounded by desert gardens and open sky. Spa treatments, rejuvenating body work, and spaces designed to nourish both body and spirit make Ojo Santa Fe one of the most restorative stops on any New Mexico itinerary — whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, recovering from a wedding weekend, or simply giving yourself the gift of slowing down.

Kakawa Chocolate House — Pre-Columbian Elixirs in the Heart of Santa Fe

No trip to Santa Fe — and certainly no special occasion — is complete without a stop at Kakawa Chocolate House.

Bonnie Bennett introduced me to Kakawa's extraordinary chocolate elixirs, which are based on pre-Columbian and other historical recipes rather than the sweetened hot chocolate most of us grew up with. The Mayan elixir I tasted was made with 22 different herbs, spices, florals, nuts, and chili — rich, complex, and deeply unlike anything you've tried before. As Bonnie reminded me, people have been drinking and savoring chocolate for thousands of years. Kakawa brings that history back to life in every cup.

It's a perfect stop for wedding parties, romantic afternoons, or any traveler who wants to taste something genuinely unlike anything else.

Plan Your Santa Fe Romance or Wellness Escape

Santa Fe works for every kind of meaningful trip — honeymoons, anniversaries, girlfriend getaways, solo wellness retreats, and of course, weddings. The city's combination of history, landscape, healing traditions, and world-class hospitality creates an environment where relaxation and discovery happen naturally, often at the same time.
