Revolutionary Road Trip Book Tour Kicks Off in Charleston | Darley Newman
A Panel at the Gaillard Center, Signed Books at Buxton Books, and a Fourth of July in Charleston to Remember
What a way to begin the Revolutionary Road Trip book tour. Emmy Award-winning PBS host and author Darley Newman kicked off her multi-city tour in Charleston, South Carolina — a city whose Revolutionary-era stories feature prominently in her new book, Revolutionary Road Trip: Hidden Stories of America's Founding Journey — with a landmark panel conversation, book signings at one of the South's most beloved independent bookstores, and a starring role in Charleston's Fourth of July celebration as America approaches its 250th anniversary.
What Happened at the Charleston Gaillard Center Book Tour Event?
At the Charleston Gaillard Center, Darley joined an incredible panel of women for a heartfelt conversation about the American Revolution, Charleston's rich history, and why these stories still matter as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026.
Polly Buxton, owner of Buxton Books, brought thoughtful moderation to the discussion, while Liz Butler shared Charleston stories rooted in generations of family history. The evening included plenty of book signing (and the discovery of Darley's new favorite signing pen), reunions with old friends, and new connections — a reminder of how meaningful it is to gather together and share stories. Special thanks to SC250 Charleston and Marissa Sams Events for making the kickoff such a memorable one.
Darley Newman at Charleston's Fourth of July Celebration
The Charleston kickoff culminated in an epic waterfront Fourth of July. At Waterfront Park, Darley shared some of Charleston's remarkable hidden history — the kind of stories that prove history is all around us, sometimes hiding in plain sight — during an evening celebrating our nation's past, present, and future. The celebration featured performances by Candice Glover, Jennie Harney-Fleming and Hamilton alumni and cast members, Ranky Tanky, Lauren Hall, The Blue Dogs, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, all building to a spectacular fireworks finale over historic Charleston Harbor. Carolyn Murray of WCBD hosted the evening with heart.
The Post and Courier featured the celebration in its roundup of "10 Charleston events celebrating America's 250th that you don't want to miss," spotlighting Darley among the trusted voices bringing the city's founding stories to life for the semiquincentennial.
