What do we truly gain from visiting historic places? Emmy Award-winning PBS host and producer Darley Newman reflects on this question in her latest article for Hallowed Ground magazine, the official publication of the American Battlefield Trust. The piece appears in the magazine’s current print edition and is also available online.
In the article, Newman draws on more than 15 years of traveling and filming for her PBS series Travels with Darley and Equitrekking to highlight the power of walking the landscapes where history unfolded. From battlefields to bridges, these experiences offer more than lessons from the past—they inspire reflection, connection, and perspective.
Newman recounts filming and visiting places such as Camden Battlefield in South Carolina, Saratoga National Historical Park in New York, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in North Carolina, Fort Fair Lawn in South Carolina, and Manassas National Battlefield Park in Virginia. She also shares how her time filming in Selma, Alabama—walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and interviewing civil rights activist Joanne Bland—reinforced her passion for telling stories where history and humanity converge.
“It’s the power of trekking landscapes where history still breathes and learning firsthand from local experts,” Newman notes.
Her Hallowed Ground article captures how standing on historic ground connects people not only to the past but also to the present and future, reminding us why these places matter and why their stories continue to resonate today.
